MKEC is looking for a Substation Physical Design Engineer to join our Electric Utility team in our Wichita or Overland Park office.


  • Development of substation design drawings which may include:
    • General arrangements & layouts
    • Elevations & section details
    • Below grade conduit plans & schedules
    • Lightning protection plans/analysis
    • Ground grid design & grounding details
    • Bill of materials (BOM)
    • Control building layouts & equipment
  • Develop bid documents and material specifications.
  • Review vendor submittals and provide analysis/feedback.
  • Generate reports on occasion.
  • Perform work in a timely manner to meet established milestones and/or deadlines.
  • Occasionally interface with clients to discuss design details and support construction tasks.
  • Serve as a mentor to other engineers in the group.
  • Provide engineering expertise to develop design solutions and meet client needs.


  • Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of work experience related to Substation Physical Design required.
  • Knowledgeable on applicable codes and industry standards including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), Rural Utility Service (RUS) Bulletins & applicable IEEE Standards.
  • Proficient with various software packages including AutoCAD, Mathcad, and other design tools.
  • Experience with Substation Design Suite (SDS), PLS-POLE/CADD, Osmose O-Calc Pro, ETAP, Milsoft WindMil/LightTable desirable.
  • Candidate must possess a mechanical aptitude with knowledge of power system design and operations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidates must be self-motivated, highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and tasks while working in a team environment.
  • Occasional travel for site visits and client meetings may be required.
